Lighthouse takes starry night for a spin

Submitted by Scott Sistek on Wednesday, March 3rd, 11:38am

Take a peek at this photo snapped during last week's sunshine by Reid Wolcott, who is a fellow meteorologist from the UW.

He framed the shot so that the tip of the Mukilteo Lighthouse was pointing right at Polaris (the North Star) and then let the camerma make a time lapse of the stars spinning around the tip.

Reid says the waterfront is one of his favorite spots to take pictures, both day and night. Here is another one below.

You can see more of his great photography at his Flickr photostream. (Here is his Mukilteo gallery).  You can even find a few prints on his main web site.

Full house at final Paine Field hearing

Submitted by Heather Reese on Friday, January 22nd, 10:46am

KOMO photographer Peter Mongillo sent in this picture from Kamiak High School Thursday night, where more than 500 people packed in for the final public hearing on commercial flights at Paine Field.

Horizon and Allegiant Airlines want to start flying 44 flights a week to Portland, Spokane and Las Vegas.

Supporters say it would be good for the slumping economy. Critics are worried about extra traffic, noise and pollution.

The FAA will take written comments on the issue through February 5th.

Reminder: Final Paine Field public hearing tonight

Submitted by Heather Reese on Thursday, January 21st, 02:42pm

The FAA will take public testimony tonight on the proposal to bring commercial air service to Paine Field:

  • Kamiak High School, 10801 Harbour Pointe Boulevard
  • 6:00 p.m.

Tonight is the third and final public hearing on the issue. Dozens of people showed at the previous meetings to protest the proposal.

Horizon and Allegiant airlines would like to start flying 44 flights per week, and eventually boost air traffic up to 70 flights by 2016. There would be two non-stop flights a day to Spokane.

New County law bans pasties, thongs on baristas

Submitted by Ray Lane on Thursday, January 7th, 11:48am

Starting today, pasties and thongs on nearly-naked baristas at coffee stands within county limits must be covered up under a new county law.

The new law tolerates baristas in bikinis, but not much less. And the county's strengthened lewd conduct ordinance comes with tougher penalties for violations for which business owners and managers can be held accountable.

It's the county's attempt to crack down on bikini baristas crossing the line, but workers at more family-friendly locations are skeptical about the stricter laws.

"I think maybe right at first, but i think it's going to go right back to how it has been," said barista Ashley Winn. "I don't think by wearing pasties, going to a bikini is going to change how anybody views any of that stuff."

The sight of scantily-clad young women flashing customers and performing simulated sexual acts at drive-through espresso huts had a lot of neighbors steamed. Vocal business owners near one risque stand near Mill Creek finally had it shutdown after a year and a half of battles.

Neighbors who helped lead the fight for the new county-wide restrictions are breathing a sigh of relief.

Submitted by Heather Reese on Monday, January 4th, 05:14pm

Jan. 5th 6:30 p.m. Snohomish County PUD Auditorium in Everett

Jan. 21st 6:00 p.m. Lynnwood Convention Center

Tighter restrictions on bikini baristas start Jan. 7

Submitted by KOMO Staff on Wednesday, December 30th, 12:42pm

Snohomish County Executive Aaron Reardon has signed into law new rules aimed to crack-down on scantily-clad baristas.

The Snohomish County Council passed two ordinances earlier this month.

Under the new rules, espresso stands featuring girls showing too much skin must be classified as "adult entertainment."

In addition, both the baristas and the owner of the stand will be held responsible for any lewd conduct.

The regulations are set to go into effect on January 7th.

If you forget to put your tree on the curb...there are other options!

Submitted by Marina Rockinger on Thursday, December 24th, 07:04pm

Maybe Jan. 2 or 3rd is too soon for you? No worries...you have other options.

Here are a few tips courtesy of Snohomish County:

*If you have curbside yard debris collection service from your garbage collector, check with the operator for instructions on when, where and how to leave your tree for pick up.

*Take your tree to a local compost facility (prices and hours vary). For more information about compost facilities in your area, go to the Washington State Department of Ecology’s Web site at https://fortress.wa.gov/ecy/recycle/

*Chip your own tree and use it for compost or mulch in your yard.

*Take your tree to one of Snohomish County’s Recycling and Transfer Stations.

Council cracking down on scantily-clad baristas

Submitted by KOMO Staff on Wednesday, December 9th, 12:24pm

The Snohomish County Council has passed two new ordinances designed to crack down on risqué coffee stands.

The unanimous vote Wednesday morning creates new licensing guidelines and standards of conduct.

The first ordinance holds not only the barista accountable for lewd conduct, but also the owner of the stand. The other proposal requires stands with scantily clad baristas to get an adult entertainment license.

In addition, the measures make for stiffer penalties for violations.

People in the audience clapped when the measures were passed, but one councilmember said he was worried about enforcement -- especially when budgets are being cut and there just aren't resources to police baristas.

He says he's also worried about a possible court challenge.

These ordinances will likely kick in around the first of the year, but it depends on when Snohomish County Executive Aaron Reardon actually signs them into law.

No decision yet on new laws for scantily clad baristas

Submitted by KOMO Staff on Wednesday, December 2nd, 05:04pm

Snohomish County Council held a public hearing this afternoon about two new law proposals aimed at taming risque coffee stands.

The first ordinance holds not only the barista accountable for lewd conduct, but also the owner of the stand.

The other proposal requires stands with scantily clad baristas to get an adult entertainment license.

KOMO photographer Scott Hopson shot the video below at today's meeting, of residents fuming mad about the stands.

Everett already tightened its lewd conduct ordinance, but Snohomish County put off a vote for another week.
