A barbeque that was never totally put out started a house fire on 73rd Place late Friday night that caused massive damage to the home.
A custodian at Mukilteo Elementary first saw the flames at the house, located next to the school on the 4800 block of 73rd Place, around 11:15 p.m. The first crews at the scene reported seeing flames from a half mile away. Firefighters from the Mukilteo Fire Department and Snohomish County Fire District #1 fought the fire.
The fire had spread from the back of the home onto the roof, then into the attic of the two-story house. It took firefighters several hours to totally put out the fire, as spot fires kept flaring up.
There is fire, smoke and water damage throughout the house. Damage is estimated at $450,000.
The homeowners, who were sleeping when the fire broke out, were able to get out safely after being alerted by their smoke detector.
It was determined that a barbeque that had been used earlier in the evening was the source of the fire.
